Which Jefferson County office handles permits for a portable toilet or event?
Jefferson County permit rules depend on whether your site is inside a city. Unincorporated jobs file building permits through the county's ePermitJC portal. Events selling food for more than 24 hours need a Jefferson County Department of Health organizer application at least 30 days ahead.
A porta potty on private land usually needs no permit of its own. Street and sidewalk spots are the exception.
- Birmingham streets: the city's Department of Transportation. See our Birmingham page.
- Food festivals: JCDH temporary food event rules; vendor forms under 14 days out cost more.
What makes porta john placement tricky in older Jefferson County neighborhoods?
Jefferson County's older neighborhoods sit on ridges like Red Mountain and Shades Mountain. Steep driveways, rear alleys and narrow lots are common. A standard unit needs a level spot within about 30 feet of the truck and a gate at least 4 feet wide, so check access before you book.
Remodels in Homewood, Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills rarely have a flat spot near the street. The end of a driveway usually works.
Red clay turns slick after summer storms, which slows weekly servicing. Text us a photo of the spot; you do not need to be home.
What projects and events in Jefferson County usually need portable toilets?
Jefferson County's steadiest demand comes from home remodels, new subdivisions and commercial builds along I-459 and I-65. Fall adds football tailgates and festivals, and spring brings church homecomings and youth sports. Plan 1 to 2 weeks ahead for fall Saturdays and graduation weekends in May.
Construction rentals bill every 28 days with weekly service. Event units arrive the day before and leave the next business day.

Porta potty questions from Jefferson County renters
Can you deliver a porta potty to a house in unincorporated Jefferson County, like Forestdale or Mount Olive?
Unincorporated Jefferson County is part of our regular route. Forestdale, Concord, Mount Olive and McCalla get the same units and service schedule as city addresses. Place the unit on private land, not the road shoulder, and book a day ahead for west-side runs.
My event is in Bessemer on a Saturday. When will the units show up?
Saturday events in Bessemer get units dropped on Friday and picked up Monday, the next business day. The units stay through Sunday at no extra cost. Order at least a week ahead for fall weekends, when trucks fill up fast.
Do I need JCDH approval just to rent a porta potty for a cookout?
A private cookout with no food sales does not need Jefferson County Department of Health approval. JCDH rules start when vendors sell food at a public event. For events over 24 hours, the organizer files at least 30 days ahead of opening day.
Is a restroom trailer practical for a backyard wedding in Jefferson County?
Restroom trailers work in Jefferson County backyards with level ground, a water hookup and a standard outlet or generator. Many hillside lots on Shades Mountain lack a level spot near the drive. If the trailer will not fit, deluxe flushing units plus a hand wash station work well.
